Well Damn

Apologies for the poor language, but that was the nicest thing I had to say after machine quilting the red circles on my quilt yesterday and realizing that I hadn't basted well enough. The whole thing was a bunchy lumpy mess. And the only way to really truly fix it was to tear it apart and start over. Take out the machine quilting on every spoke of the circles, take out all the hand quilting, take out the basting. It was 5 p.m. when I figured this out. Ugh. I felt sick. It wasn't just the basting, it was a combination of small mistakes in judgment along the way that added up to yuck. I went for a walk to get some fresh air and make sure I wasn't being rash. When I came back it still looked yuck and I was resigned. I told Dave I was sorry but I was in no mood to fix the nice dinner I'd planned and would he please go get a frozen pizza and a Berries-n-Cream Dr. Pepper? He didn't even whine about going to the store. He knew it was bad. He noted that it was a good thing I'd baked cookies on Saturday. So, I popped in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie and got busy with the seam ripper. By the end of the movie I was almost done tearing up the quilt. Then we watched Napoleon Dynamite, which cheered me up quite a bit. After the movie, I pressed the heck out of the pieces and sewed the circles to the background (I had just pinned them, planning to applique and quilt at the same time - really bad plan). Now it's on a work table with the quilting lines remarked and about half basted. With a little luck, I'll be caught back up in a couple of days. Ugh. Bleh. Drat.

I hate the unsewing! But we must do the right thing.

Stuff like that usually happens to me around 10:30 p.m. after I've been working for a while. When I start swearing, Bruce says "time for bed!" have you ever tried 505 basting spray? My friend Joan turned me on to it. It's great for smallish work, but I've used it on big pieces, too. Then I pin randomly in the center, but all the way around the edges. It's a lifesaver for sure.

Been there, cried those tears. Cept my disaster was bobbin barf all over the back of my quilt, which I didn't notice until it had been going on for some time. Ugh. As we sew, so shall we rip, or somesuch. Chin up!
